Inset Lines

This simple tutorial will show you how to create an inset line and apply it to create a menu. .

Start a new document and fill it with a background color of your choice.

Now choose the pencil tool and set brush size to 1px.

Press D to reset your color (your foreground color needs to be black).

Now just draw a black horizontal line across the canvas.

Now apply this Drop Shadow layer style to the line:
Layer » Layer Style » Drop Shadow.

Then set the line's blending mode to "Soft Light"

Now you can use this line to do some interesting things, such as making a menu system for your website. to the left is an example.

Lastrose Oct/25/2011 13:22I usually do this as shadows. With CSS3 more so, I like to use rgba opacity so that the effect a bit more subtle. box-shadow: inset 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,.5),inset 0 -1px 0 rgba(255,255,255,.5). Of course this won't work with older browsers, but you could always do something with borders as a fallback. border-top:1px solid white;border-bottom:1px solid black;border:0px solid rgba(0,0,0,0);

Jon Feb/4/06 12:23Somthing is missing from this tutorial. The drop shadow doesn't appear the like yours does. Do the steps remain the same for PS CS2 uers?
Aaron Feb/4/06 12:04To draw a straight line instead of free hand hold "shift" while drawing the line.
Rocky Dec/20/05 09:37I'm an idiot. I didn't click on the "Layer" screenshot link that you posted.
Rocky Dec/20/05 09:25Do I need to create a new layer to draw the line? Because once I draw the line I cannot select "Layer" -> "Layer Style" menu. It is "grayed" out.
