Light Burst Text

In this tutorial, i'll show you how to make a text effect with a light burst coming through from behind..

Start a new document 600x400. with Black background.

Use the type tool to create your text in white.

Now apply the following layer styles to the text.

Drop Shadow

Inner Shadow

Color Overlay

-Now duplicate the text layer (right click on the layer » Duplicate layer),
-hide the top layer.
-select the bottom text layer as the working layer.

Now go to Layer » Merge Visible.

Now go to Filter » Distort » Polar Coordinates: Select Polar to Rectangular

- Now go to image » rotate canvas » 90CW.

- Filter » Stylize » Wind: Method: Wind. Direction: From the Right.
Press CTRL+F 2 more times to reapply the filter.

- Filter » Stylize » Wind: Method: Wind. Direction: From the LEFT.
Press CTRL+F 1 more time to reapply the filter.

Now rotate the image back: Image » Rotate Canvas » 90CCW

- Filter » Distort » Polar Coordinates: Options: Rectangular to Polar

Now use the elliptical marquee tool to make an oval selection, just inside the edge of the white blast.

Then go to SELECT » INVERSE, then SELECT » FEATHER, enter amount as 20px.

Now Filter » Blur » Radial Blur: Blur Method: Zoom. Quality: Best. Amount: 40

Now CTRL+D to deselect.

Now create a new Color Balance adjustment layer above this effects layer.

Double click on the color balance layer icon to adjust the colors.

Now do the following:
- Enable/show the original text layer. (clicking on the eye icon.)
- Create a new layer
- Link the new layer and the original layer together.
- Then go to Layer » Merge Linked.

Now just change the blending mode of the top layer. You might like 1 mode better than the other. Here's what I set.

Blending mode: Overlay

Blending mode: Multiply

This one I added a new layer with some Filter » Noise » Add Noise, then set the blending mode to Darken.

Kevin Sep/06/2011 10:30The version of Photoshop I have, it seems, doesn't have a color balance option under the "create new adjustment layer" menu... :/ Anyway, mine turned out great after a little tweaking. Thanks! :)

PhotoshopGod Apr/27/2010 21:44aight bitches, this is how it is. if you want it to not have a black background, just put it on top of the background the want it on and set it to lighten, as long as it's lighter than your background the black parts will become transparent. so stfu.

Silvia Sep/30/2009 12:44The tutorial is not terrible. I have no formal photoshop training and even I thought that nothing in this tutorial was hard to find or figure out.

Gnarizard May/10/09 05:05I donno what you guys are whining about, I followed the tutorial and got exactly the same thing (different words obviously, though). If you don't know where something is, take a look around, and if you don't know what "hide/show layer" is or how to use blending properties, or at least to create a new layer, stop using Photoshop, 'cause you could be using MS Paint.

rt Feb/18/09 09:19Great effect. I learned more about coordinates.
Noobie Feb/6/09 05:28Good final product, terrible tutorial. Author assumes we know too many things, if we new Photoshop well, we wouldn't need a tutorial. It would be nice to know all the settings, step by step. Thanks for posting however. Its still good to know what is possible.
rob Feb/5/09 11:14Once again . Would be nice if in the tutorials we got told what text they use so when we try and do the tutorial are result is correct . HArd when you have to use a different text and results look different .
