BattleField 2 Logo

This tutorial attempts to re-create the Battlefield 2 logo using photoshop. .

Please follow this tutorial as is. The font sizes and styles used in this tutorial complements each other. If you follow this tutorial, and apply the styles on a really small font, the results will be different. so follow the tutorial properly.

Start a new document 800x550.

Use the type tool, and create your text.
Use the following:

Now apply the following Layer styles to the font.

Gradient Overlay

Bevel and Emboss

Inner Shadow

Drop Shadow

Stroke

You should have something like this:

Now, click on the EYE icon of "stroke" style in the text's layer styles to hide the stroke style for now.

Now CTRL+CLICK on the text layer in the layers pallete to make a selection of the text.

Now go to Edit » Copy Merged to copy the selection, then CTRL+P to paste it to a new layer.

You can click on the EYE icon of the stroke to enable it again now.

Now that new layer you just pasted should be overlaying your original text layer, if not, move it so that it is.

Now CTRL+ CLICK on the new layer you just pasted to make a outline selection of it.

Now go to Filter » Noise » Add Noise:
Amount: 20
Distribution: Uniform
Monocrhomatic: Checked

Then go to Filter » Blur » Motion Blur: Angle: 0, Distance: 30

Now press CTRL+D to deselect.

Now go to Filter » Sharpen » Unsharp Mask: Amount: 500%. Radius: 5. Threshold: 50

Now set this layer's blending mode to Overlay.

You should now have this:

Before we can continue with the next step, we need to create a stroke for the scanline effect.

Create a new document: 10x10px (yes, that small)

Now select the brush tool, and set your brush to 3px soft edge.

Set your color to #A01A2D and then draw a horizontal line accross the canvas:

This is what you should have now:

Now go to Edit » Define Pattern. Give it a name: "Scanlines" . That's it, you can just close that document without saving now.

Lets go back to our other document.

Now lets create the number 2:
Use the text tool and type in number "2" with the following properties:

The text color should be : #CE1B1B. Place this new text layer UNDER the battle field text.

Now apply the following layer styles to the number 2:

Drop Shadow

Inner Shadow

Bevel and Emboss

Pattern Overlay (for "Pattern", select "Scanlines", the one you just created in the previous step:

Stroke

Thats it. You should now have something like this:

Oxide Jul/23/2010 22:14I tried it with CS4 but it won't work, only because it won't let me change it to an overlay.... Does anyone have a fix for this? Or a way to import it to GIMP for the final step?
team76 Feb/23/2010 00:21hello very nice but ,the link .psd is dead
Ned Shneebly Feb/27/07 08:13I tried to recreate this with PS CS9 but some of the values don't seem to work. The font size of 234.87 px seems to be too big for the 800x550 size. I looked at the downloaded file and it says the font was 163 px. Also CTRL+P seems to want to print the image. I guess it's CTRL+V for paste into new layer? OK now I'm done and it's pretty cool Some small problems given I've never used photoshop before. I never would have attempted this without a step by step.
one of the Feb/20/07 03:04one of the best tutorials i saw on the net! well done!
Jimmy Jan/25/07 14:06This is great and all, but my words didn't achieve the right affect, I know I'm supposed to tweak the gradient overlay, but I just couldn't find that part. Still works though.....whatever....

dD_Pirate Jul/15/06 13:43Everyone's a bloody critic. Always forgetting to be polite and thank the messenger, instead of killing him. Grow up. This tutorial r0x btw. Very nice. It could be slightly more comprehensive, but hey ... why don't you do some exploring on your own if you wanna learn photoshop. Thanx for sharing this Nathan.

[ECC] Anti-Sect May/14/06 19:47For the 'Battlefield' text use the font 'Impact' For a realistic '2' instead of the one shown in the example, use the font 'Atrox' Both fonts can be downloaded from most font sites.
charlie Mar/25/06 18:33in case any1 cares the font is atrox search for "bf2 font" in google and the first result is it this fixes the "2"
